There are a number of methods for determining the cost of an indexing job. I charge by "indexable page," which should give the author a good idea of how much the job will cost. "Indexable pages" do not include front matter (title page, table of contents, preface, introduction) but they do include introduction, conclusion, appendices, photographs, graphs, and footnotes.
I charge $4-$6 per indexable page.
The "indexable page" determination of cost may have to be adjusted according to a number of factors, including but not limited to:
- Foreign words, names, and other proper nouns
- Type style and font size
- Specialization of topic and level of detail and specificity desired or required by the author or publisher
- Amount of time allotted
- Re-indexing required if pagination is re-done
- depth - the degree to which a topic is represented in detail in an index (numbers of precise terms, levels, cross-references)
